Wedding Chair from Eglinton Castle

This chair was one of a set of 8. The set was made to celebrate the marriage of Archibald William Montgomerie, 14th Earl of Eglinton, and Lady Sophia Adelaide Theodora Anderson Pelham, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Yarbourgh. The chairs were sold, along with the rest of the contents of Eglinton Castle at Kilwinning Ayrshire, at auction in 1925. This single chair was bought by a local family who donated it to the museum in the 1960s. The upholstery is covered in hand sewn canvas work embroidery.
