Washerwomen and Water Mill

Before the engineering machinery of the industrial revolution reached out of the towns into more rural areas, tradesmen continued to harness natural sources as power.  In the case of this 19th century photograph we can see the use of the river by the miller to power his mill and the washerwomen in the foreground also made a living from the river washing clothes.
