African Lion

Brian the Lion is one of the best-known and loved faces in Kilmarnock.  He has been in the Natural Science Collections of the Dick Institute since the very early days, over 100 years ago.  Parents and grandparents who remember coming to see Brian as children now bring along their own children and grandchildren to be introduced to him.    Brian's almost white fur is not his natural colour; over the decades that he has been on display, sunlight and the chemicals used by the taxidermist have bleached his fur.  This is a good example of the need for modern museums to monitor the enviroment in which their collections are kept. Brian is now on display in a darker part of the museum to help stop him fading further.
