Charter by Walter Comyn of Rowallan

Description:

"Charter by Walter Comyn, dominus de Rowallan to William Surrurgess de Stanley in the forest of Paisley of a four merkland in the town of Muckil Gawyn in the granter's tenement of Rowallan to be held blench for payment of a silver penny at the manor place of Rowallan at Martinmas yearly."

 

Although this document has been dated around 1330 it is probably earlier as Sir Walter Comyn is supposed to have been dead by then.  The Rowallan estate was inherited by his daughter Isobel and passed to the Mures when she married Sir Gilchrist Mure, one of the heroes of the Battle of Largs, in 1263.  If these facts are correct then this document must have actually been written in the 13th century, which probably makes it the earliest document relating to the Rowallan estate.

 

The Comyns were allies of the Balliol family and were one of the most powerful families in Scotland until they paid the price for opposing Robert the Bruce.
