The registration of births, deaths and marriages became compulsory in Scotland on 1st January 1855 following an Act of Parliament. The Senior Registrar is responsible for ensuring that all births, deaths and marriages in East Ayrshire are registered. In addition, staff can provide a genealogical service to people wishing to research their family tree.

The long-established Irvine Burns Club, founded in 1826, maintains a Robert Burns Museum in the town where the poet Robert Burns lived and worked in 1781.
