South by South West is the third touring exhibition produced in conjunction with the Future Museum project which provides free access to the collections of south-west Scotland. The website has received over 120,000 unique visits and 7.5M hits since its introduction in June 2006 and provides a wealth of information on the region and a valuable educational resource.

Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council said: “This is the biggest project so far produced by this thriving partnership between East Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway and North and South Ayrshire Councils and looks set to attract huge numbers to the venues involved.

The ground-breaking exhibitions show the importance of the south-west of Scotland as a visually stunning and inspirational backdrop to the work of
artists from 1780 to the present day.

This is a unique opportunity to explore the diverse and exciting body of work associated with the region and held within the collections of the museums and galleries of both the south-west and beyond. The three distinct exhibitions each deal with a different period of time from the mid 18th century right up to the present day. They will show simultaneously in venues across the region, providing an opportunity to discover the region as you travel through the creative centres of Kilmarnock, Ayr, Kirkcudbright and Dumfries”.

The project has been funded by the Regional Development Challenge Fund which is funded by the Scottish Government and administered by Museums Galleries Scotland; The European Regional Development Fund and the three local authorities.

Joanne Orr, CEO of Museums Galleries Scotland, said;
“The overarching aim of the Regional Development Challenge Fund is to develop the capacity and sustainability of the museum sector through active partnerships. The South by South West project is a fabulous example of the huge benefits to be gained through active partnerships and it is clear that and the mutual positive opportunities that they present will continue well into the future.”
