David Tress - Chasing Sublime Light

This is the first exhibition in Scotland of work by the established artist, David Tress, who is based in Pembrokeshire in Wales. This touring exhibition features contemporary paintings and drawings created by David in response to journeys taken in the wilder landscapes of Cumbria, Northumberland, North Wales, North Yorkshire and the West of Scotland. The journeys relate to those taken in the late 18th and 19th centuries by landscape artists of the Romantic period, such as J.M.W. Turner, Paul Sandby and Thomas Girtin. David Tress has captured these scenes as they now exist, using watercolours, oils and mixed media in an expressive and immediate style. The exhibition highlights artists’ responses to and changes in the natural landscape, and the materials and processes used to create work.

Fifty paintings are in five groups to reflect the five geographical areas. Six display boards with information text and illustrations accompany the exhibition, as well as a colour and black and white illustrated catalogue. A “Meet the Artist” event and talk will be organised in May as part of the exhibition activities for visitors to the gallery - details to follow.

The exhibition runs in the Maclaurin Galleries from 1st May – 13th June 2010.

The work illustrated is 'Transport, Logistics (Byland Abbey)'
